Pastor Johnson was born to the Rev. Dr. William E. Johnson, Sr. and Delores B. Johnson in Baltimore, Maryland where he attended public schools.  He earned a B. A. degree in English with a second major in African-American/African History from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va.; a Master of Divinity degree from Howard University, Washington, D.C.; and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Virginia Seminary and College, Lynchburg, Va.

Pastor Johnson came to Christ and was baptized at the Timothy Baptist Church of Baltimore under the Pastorate of the Rev. Dr. James L. Ball. He was Licensed and Ordained to the gospel ministry in 1982 by the Union Baptist Church of Turners Station, MD under the Pastorate of his father.

He was called to serve as Assistant to the Pastor (Dr. A. C. D. Vaughn) of the Sharon Baptist Church of Baltimore in January 1989, and was elevated to Pastor by vote of the congregation in 1991.  He is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Miles Washington Connor Family Support Center of Sharon Baptist Church, Inc.

Pastor Johnson has simultaneously served Maryland State Government for over 25 years.  His duties have primarily been focused on issues of equity and integrity in State government, and he currently serves on the Leadership Team of the Maryland Department of Human Resources.

He has held leadership positions in several civil and human rights organizations including President of the Maryland Association of Equal Opportunity Personnel (MAEOP), Co-Chair of the Coalition Opposed to Violence and Extremism (COVE), and Board Member of the Maryland Chapter of The National Association of Human Rights workers. Pastor Johnson is a trained mediator and is the recipient of several honors and citations for his service to the Church as well as the State.

Pastor Johnson is happily married to Felicia D. Johnson, an educator in Baltimore County schools.  Their family includes three children, Danielle F. and Steven T. Nickens, Sr., Dr. Darrell M. Gray, II and one grandson, Steven T. Nickens, Jr.

His guiding scriptures are Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”  And Micah 6:8 “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
